Almost every diver has day dreams of making a living doing what they love best….scuba diving.   The concept of making a living doing what most people pay big money to do as a recreation is further fueled by the idea of living  in some of the most exotic places on earth.  The few who are successful in making the transition from the office to the sea, and being financially prosperous while doing it, are really few and far between.  The opportunities are few and the competition for those jobs is plentiful.  The job of caretaker of Hamilton Island, on the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland, Australia,  appears to be the exception.

In an effort to fill this seasonal, temporary position, and driven by a desire to advance the vacation potential of Australia, the Office of Tourism for the Queensland government created a special website and application process to select the individual to fill this temporary six month assignment.  Of course, the job description for this position is a “to die for” combination of scuba diving, fish feeding, public relations, and travel among the various islands of the Great Barrier Reef island chain.  The $105,000 AD salary for the six month assignment, combined with the all-included living expenses in a luxuy location, is also a big draw.  Mindful of the tough economic times, the government of Queensland decided to advertise this opportunity in 18 countries, including the United States and China.  The result is a flood of internet applications so large that the official “Best Job in the World” website is a constant series of web server crashes and reboots.  Traffic on the webiste is so heavy that the computer experts for the Queensland government are having a hard time just keeping the website running.  It appears that people from all over the world - in fact millions of people -  are trying to make their day dreams become reality.  Everyone wants their chance at the Best Job in the World.  But, you better hurry…the application process closes on February 22, 2009.
