Pensacola, Florida — USS Oriskany Dive Trips Scheduled
April 22, 2008 4:30 pm Dive TravelI just thought I’d let everyone know that we booked two trips to Pensacola, Florida today. We will be diving with Scuba Shack Pensacola, aboard their custom designed dive vessel, the Wet Dream. Both trips will feature Saturday boat charters to the Gigantic Wreck of the USS Oriskany, the largest intentionally sunk artificial reef in the world. Sunday charters will be to popular Pensacola dive sites like the Russian Freighter and the Pete Tide. Use the links below to check out the details of each of the trips.
July 12-13, 2008 - Pensacola, Florida
September 6-7, 2008 - Pensacola, Florida

Last Fall Doc and myself dove the “O” on the same day that the Blues were doing an airshow at the Navy base. The boat stopped in the pass and we watched the show from a different perspective than those at the show, as we were able to see the jets as they came into formation and quite a bit lower as well….so even though the show will be along the beach, the boat will possibly be coming in around the time of the show. So you may get a dive and a show combo…

As someone always looking to schedule more dive vacations, what are the conditions like on the big O? How far of a ride offshore is it, any ideal time of the year to head out? Perhaps September would be doable for us to join the DiveSports crew!

Przeor,
The Oriskany is about 23 miles offshore, south of Pensacola. Conditions out there vary from day to day, but are usually very favorable for diving. The visibility is usually better (50-100′) than some of the sites closer to shore. The current can tend to kick up a little out there, but that isn’t anything all that unusual for the Pensacola area. The water temp won’t change that much from July to September, surface temps will be in the low to mid 80’s and bottom temps will be much the same, maybe dropping into the high 70’s in July and probably in the low 80’s in September.
We would love to have you join us on either trip!

The might O…if you get the chance, dive this wreck. I dove it and it is worth the trip. As mentioned before the current can pick up. We were hanging on the line like flags on our second dive.
